Summary of Project
The ISTD brief contained a selection of four projects, where I chose project 3: Invisible Cities as the theme for the project. The aim of the project is to create a visual retelling of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities by means of Typography. The Typography is to be explored for each city that is described in the book, to covey their characteristics and concepts generated from them.
Intensive research into the book and unique concepts needs to be generated in order to understand and apply Invisible Cities within a new visual format.

Rationale
Drawn from Italo Calvino's book Invisible Cities, the concept of the project relies on the complex and interactive relationship between Desire and memory, and how the selection of cities in the final design displays them. The book has a fairly mythical and fantasy atmosphere to it, thus the use of mythical creatures and a high fiction as a theme is appropriated for this project. The format of the final design deliverable, which is meant to incorporate wayfinding and typography, is a square foldout acting as a map to the cities and places that is described within the text, while also incorporating an actual drawn out map of the 6 cities within relation to each other.
The final mock ups and presentation display a sense of medieval fantasy, with the maps being presented on a worn wooden table, with candlelit lighting to convey the mood of being within a room in the medieval era, looking at the map to pinpoint a direction or journey.

Mock-ups
The mock-ups aim to convey a sense of a medieval fantasy setting, where the map is placed on an old wooden table, lighted by candles in the imaginary room. All mock-ups were created with Cinema 4D for a cohesive look.
